Scion OC things aww yisss
It wasn't that Topher liked being secretive. No, normally he was a very honest person, and shared as much as he could with the people around him. Honesty was the best policy, after all, and he had found that more people would listen to him if he kept them in the loop.
The problem with honesty is that there are some truths that are better left unsaid. Like the truth of his father, and the truth of many other people's fathers and mothers. That truth is a painful one, and even if it weren't hiding it would be a necessity. The gods didn't like it when their secrets were let out, after all, and Topher was one of their biggest secret-keepers.
Who knew that having the knowledge of the world was such a dangerous burden?
Today's task was not an easy one, either. For all his abilities, Topher still couldn't tell a Scion in a crowd unless they actually used their powers, and with an untapped Scion that was very unlikely to happen. Hell, This guy he was looking for, he might not even know about who he is! Or she, Topher supposed. He hadn't been told if this Scion was a boy or a girl, just that they existed and they needed to be found, and fast.
At least he had been given a city name. That certainly narrowed down the search a bit.
But still, Topher was left with actually finding this person now. He could spend days, or weeks, or even months carefully surveying the city, checking out each person until he found the right one. Topher was certainly patient enough to do that. But time was of the essence, and Topher might not have a Scion to find if he took the long route.
So, against his best judgement, Topher went for 'plan C': he found a nice, open hill just outside of town, which overlooked part of the city, and he set himself up there. He sat down on the grass cross-legged, and he pulled out a rather large book from his bag. This book looked old, but not worn down, and there were hundreds of bookmarks sticking out from various pages. Carefully selecting one bookmark, Topher opened up the book to a specific page, one which had a drawing of a complex spell in it. Ultimately, the spell itself wouldn't be completed today. It took three days and a lot of physical components to successfully complete. But Topher wasn't trying to actually use that spell. No, he was trying to provoke any Scions in the area to come to the area.
See, when a Scion uses his or her powers, any Scions in the area can sense it. And by choosing a long and complicated spell, Topher is ensuring that the 'Scion over here' feeling will go on for some time, more than long enough for someone who senses it to get bothered by it and go to check it out.
It'll also draw monsters to the area too, but Topher is not worried about that. He would have to use his powers to fight monsters as well, which would have the same result as the spell would. Hence the open area: he will see danger coming long before it shows up.
Plus, he's got his two ravens, Wiki and Dia, hanging out in a tree nearby. Even if he misses something, they will see it and alert him of any danger. Or any approaching people.
Sometimes Topher is surprised by his own genius.

Or to investigate, as the case may be. He may be clueless about why he can see spirits the way he does, but that lack of knowledge has never stopped him from trying to help, and when he realizes there's something going on that he can just feel? ...okay, actually that kind of worries him, but curiosity outweighs his nerves. It could be something that needs to be taken care of, and it's unlikely that anyone else will.
The hill Topher's picked isn't far from where he lives, and so it won't take long to get results. Ryan shows up after spending a while deliberating, hands tucked into his pockets as he trudges up the hill; he's not a very imposing stranger, at least, tall but thin, with curly hair pulled into a messy bun and a pair of glasses that keep trying to slide down his nose. With the way the hill's positioned he's pretty sure he's already been noticed, so he gives Topher a hesitant little wave as he approaches, flashes him a nervous grin.
"--hey. I, uh- I don't guess you've seen anything..." Ryan trails off momentarily as he glances down to the book, peering curiously at it. "...anything like that," he finishes. "Whatever was going on there, that was you, right?"
