[It's the middle of May, and spring exams have just finished. Seems like the perfect time for some breathing room, right? Well, there's actually going to be a bit of excitement before the next big event!

See, a new kid just transferred to Shujin academy. A kinda scrawny kid who looks a little short to be in high school, actually. But somehow he is actually a second-year, imagine that! He's not in Akira's class, so they won't cross paths immediately, but Rin's reputation definitely precedes him. Before his first day of school is even over, there's already whispers of 'the violent new kid' and 'what he did to those kids at True Cross Academy'. There's no concrete details, what with it all being rumors and all, but rumors are enough to make everyone wary of this new kid.

The question is, will Akira be wary of him too?

At the end of the day Rin can be found walking home by himself. Despite all of the rumors about how violent and dangerous he is, he actually seems to be in a good mood. Either he hasn't noticed how people talk about him yet, or he doesn't care. But still, that would be a good time to approach him to find out if the rumors are true or not.]

[Shujin students had always been horrible about gossip. the rumors that flew around school when Akira first arrived-- he has a criminal record, he assaulted someone for no reason, don't get involved with him or he'll attack you on sight, he's so incredibly dangerous!-- are still fresh in his mind this soon after his transfer. and while he had always let them roll off of his shoulders (who cared about what a bunch of strangers thought, anyway?) the new ones that suddenly fly up, whispered in the hallways and in the student bathrooms, kind of take him off guard]

[he'd almost assume that this new batch of gossip was about him, if there weren't mentions of a school with which he was familiar-- where is True Cross, anyway? it doesn't take much eavesdropping to realize they're talking about the new kid in Ryuji's class. the spiky headed kid, who seems to keep to himself (or is forced to stay by himself, because no one will associate with him) and yet always wears a smile nonetheless. Ryuji and Akira decide right away to approach him, because as Shujin's resident problem children, of course they do]

[unfortunately, Ryuji isn't around when Akira catches Rin walking home from school. something about having to run some errands for his mom before heading home. but that doesn't stop Akira from letting out a thoughtful hum and approaching, hands in his pockets, shoulders slouched]

Yo.

[of course he isn't wary?? OF COURSE HE ISN'T]

[For a moment there Rin actually does a double-take, because at first he mistakes Akira for someone else who is very familiar and absolutely should not be at Shujin. But on a closer look Rin realizes that no, this isn't Yukio skipping school (and town, technically) to come visit him. This is another kid entirely. Someone who goes to his new school, if the uniform is anything to go by.

So Rin quickly throws up a casual smile. It's not a fake one or anything, Rin is generally an agreeable person. But he definitely is trying to start things off on a good foot, even if the rumors have already started to circulate and warn people off. If someone's approaching him then it must be for something good, right?]

Hey.

[Yep, a conversation is happening! He can do this, he can do this-]

You don't look familiar, so I guess you're not in my class, huh?

[NAILED IT]

[that is absolutely the sort of smile someone wears when they're purposefully trying to be unassuming. or at least, trying to make a good impression. Akira only recognizes it because it's what he does, whenever he's interacting with a teacher or someone outside of the small group of friends he's managed to accumulate]

[he gets it. he really does]

Nope.

[his answer is punctuated with a grin, half-amused]

Class 2-D. Ms. Kawakami is my homeroom teacher.

[leans forward a bit to study Rin's expression, kicking at the ground idly as he does so. he then continues, voice light]

Congratulations on your brand new Shujin reputation, by the way.

[Oh right. That.

All in all it hasn't been that bad of a day for Rin. Sure, the stares were annoying, but his 'brand new Shujin reputation' kept most people at bay. And really, being left alone is a blessing sometimes. It let him get through the day without getting overwhelmed.

So while he does get a bit irritated at the mention of that 'reputation', he's in a good enough of a mood that it doesn't set off his temper. And instead, he just shrugs casually.]

Not much you can do about gossip mongers, I guess. Besides, it's true. Mostly.

[That one twist on the rumor, the one about him roundhouse-kicking a kid through a third-floor window? That's definitely an exaggeration. But the normal-sounding rumors are true at least.]

[immediately, without flinching or showing the slightest bit of wariness, even after Rin confirms that parts of it are true]

That doesn't mean the entire school needs to fling your business around like it's a volleyball.

[JUST SAYING. he was being facetious when he said "congrats," anyway]

Akira, by the way. Akira Kurusu.

It's kinda hard to have privacy in school. Especially high school.

[There's a reason he wanted to quit and go right into the work force after middle school, after all. It took a lot of convincing to get him to go to high school at all. And look how well that worked out for him too.]

Rin Okumura. Just 'Rin' is fine, by the way.

[That last part is said out of habit, because. Well. Being a twin means that sometimes you have to specify which twin is being addressed.

Ah. But he doesn't go to the same school as Yukio anymore, does he?

For a moment Rin's smile falters, but then he brings it right back up.]

Well, if you weren't scared off already, then I guess we can be acquaintances. I won't blame you if you take off running though.

Just "Rin," and just "Akira." Works for me.

[he prefers to avoid all the formalities of last names and honorifics, anyway. the only reason he uses them is because other people prefer them, and he's trying to maintain a polite demeanor when around people he can't get a good read on]

Haven't seen a reason to take off running yet. [he continues with light amusement] Actually. . . it's usually the opposite.

[with people running from him. idly, he wonders if Rin had heard the rumors of that violent, drug-dealing, knife-wielding second year transfer student, or if all of them had died once Rin himself became the center of Shujin's grape vine]

And really, Rin has heard rumors about Akira too. But Rin knows rumors aren't entirely true, so he's expecting the drug-dealing and knife-wielding to be something like 'gave a kid a tylenol while holding a butter knife'.]

So I heard. You're not exactly popular here either, are you? Imagine the rumors once people see the two of us talking together.

[Two delinquents, teaming up for no good? They'll be the talk of the town.

Not that Rin will actually do anything bad, he's not about that. He's just got a nasty temper, that's all.]
