[March is usually a season of changes and new beginnings, what with the end of winter and the return of spring. Exams are done, graduation has happened, and with one week left in the month all of the first-years are getting ready for their second year at school. It's an exciting time for most, as it means new challenges and new growth is on the horizon.

None of this is true for one weapon, though.

Rin sits at his desk in his room, looking a piece of paper over for the thousandth time. He had known this day would come, but he hadn't expected it to be so soon. He may have been cleared by doctors to go back into the general class population, but he doesn't feel ready. Keeping up with tutors had somehow been easier than regular classes, and he just knew his grades were going to drop again without the one-on-one attention.

He is glad to be free of that medical ward finally, but it doesn't mean he wants to go back to school. And it doesn't mean he wants to find another meister. ]

Man...and here I thought I could just coast through and get my degree before going and doing my own thing.

[He reads over the first few lines of the letter again: "We at the academy are happy to welcome you back to the general ed classrooms. Given your successful recovery, we're recommending that you attend the 2nd year weapon and meister meet-and-greet, which will be held this upcoming Thursday at 2pm." The letter went on to detail his classroom for next year and the academic expectations, all of which were too boring to care about. It's the meet-and-greet that bothers him more anyway.

It's not like he doesn't know who all these students are. Barring random 2nd semester transfers, he did attend classes with them all for a few months. The accident that had taken him out of commission didn't happen until July, well after the start of the school year. But all of them have had eight months to make friends and team up in their own ways. There probably wouldn't be a meister in need of a weapon there anyway, and he would just have to awkwardly sit out until he got assigned to someone later. He couldn't even partner up with Yukio and Shiemi, as despite being twins he was an entirely different weapon from Yukio and they weren't really compatible for dual-wielding. Not that he would want to do that anyway, Shiemi is too nervous and would probably worry about breaking him.

If only his last meister ever cared about that.

Sighing, Rin stands up from his desk. As awkward as it would be, he still needed to go. Maybe nobody would recognize him anymore and just assume he's a new student, given that his hair had turned white after the accident.]

I'll just go for a minute, then I'll duck out.

[Enough effort to make the teachers see that he's trying.

He shoves the letter in his pocket as he turns to leave. And 20 minutes later, he arrives at one of the large classrooms on campus, where all of the 2nd years are gathering to say hello to each other before the start of school on Monday.]

at least rin isn't the last person to show up! shortly after him, breathing a little heavily as if she'd run to get here on time, but that doesn't really stop her. she immediately brightens upon seeing the rest of the class, waving at a friend before glancing over at rin.

he looks... awkward. like he doesn't want to be here, or at least doesn't know how to talk to anyone. but that makes sense, right? new kids always feel that way. ochako hasn't forgotten what it was like when she first started here, so she puts on her best smile and goes to right next to him, ignoring the rules of personal space. ]

Hey, they didn't tell us we were getting any new students for this term! But don't worry, everyone here's pretty nice! [ ...glances at some of the other students. ] ...Most of them, anyway!

[ as she turns back to rin, she thinks for a second that he looks... kind of familiar? she'd recognize someone with that kind of hair, though, wouldn't she? so she shakes off that thought and continues speaking without giving him a chance to respond to the first part. ]

Sooooo... Are you a meister, too? Do you have a partner already? I know some people come here with partners in mind already. Who's yours? Maybe I know them! Ooooh, and maybe we'll be in the same classes!
