[Shiro is familiar with the idea of a shinigami, in that 'shinigami' means 'death god' and there are legends and stuff. Also, he's definitely seen idiots in clothes like what Ichigo is wearing running around. But he doesn't really know much about them beyond that, and figures that Ichigo really is a god of death of some sort.
Which is kind of worrisome, Shiro is not so sure he wants to live underfoot of a master of life and death. It also worries him because cats are associated with the dead, and he really doesn't want to have to deal with cats.
