Those two aren’t here right now, I hope. I have a rather delicate matter to discuss with you, though I’m guessing you already know what I want to ask.

I have an idea, but why don't you go ahead and explain it to me?

[Erhard follows, settling into a seat with a soft sigh. He still owes for his previous wish. What in the world will the price be for something like this?]

I can only ask because I know you’ll tell me the cost before I accept the terms. You’re not the devil, after all. But I’m still afraid of what the answer might be, because if I can’t accept... it’s God knows how many steps back from being able to help the person I love. It will feel like another failure, like I’ve let him down again.

[Even with therapy, medication, and genuine happiness, he’s still recovering from a lifetime of doubt and self-loathing.]

Being unable to help doesn't make you a failure. As much as it stings, sometimes there are situations where your specific set of skills will not be helpful. Everyone has situations like that, where they must leave the care of a loved one in the hands of another. It is difficult, but it is a part of life, and it doesn't make you a failure.

But let's see what your wish is before deciding if it's impossible or not, hmm?

[He has to spit it out before he loses his nerve. Maybe he should take one of his panic attack sublinguals, but they make him drowsy and he needs his mind sharp.]

Sherlock needs a new Master to protect him from what happened to Moriarty recently. Rather than asking someone else to tie themselves to him, I want to be able to support him. I want to be able to fight by his side, because I know this mess with the Foundation isn’t over yet. But there’s no magic in my world. The only power I have is what 6350 gave me. It’s let me save lives, but I’d give it up if it means helping him.

The answer you're looking for is in the words you just spoke: "The only power I have is what 6350 gave me". Regardless of where it came from, that power is now yours. And any amount of power is sufficient for forming a bond between a master and servant.

Though if you're looking for more power to support him, rather than sustaining him on just the power you currently have, we might be able to do something about that.

[Erhard lets out a sigh of relief, though he can’t relax completely yet.]

I wasn’t sure if an SCP ability counted as mana. So it’s better than not having any power he can use. But I do want enough to support him, not just as a Master but as someone who can protect him and others important to me. I know I’ll never be like... you know... but if I can do something....

All living beings have mana. To gain the amount of mana you want, however, will be a challenge. Gaining mana is similar to gaining magic. And there are only three methods by which you can do that.

[He holds up one finger.]

First, you can be born with it. This method we can discount for now, as there is no way to affect the circumstances of your birth without paying a hefty cost, one far more costly than I am comfortable even offering.

Next-

[He holds up a second finger.]

-you can be gifted that magic. This has already happened to you via 6350, but there are no limits on how much you can be gifted and when. If you can find a sufficient source of magic that is willing to part with some of it for your sake, I can facilitate that exchange.

The final way-

[And here's the third finger.]

-is to steal someone else's magic. Once again, if you find someone with sufficient magic, I can facilitate this. But the cost for this method will be high.

[A sufficient source of magic? There are several people Erhard knows who qualify... and probably none of them like him enough to give away a portion of their power. Stealing it is out, both because of the cost and the fact that he isn't sure he could live with himself.]

Somehow I have to find a willing donor. I don't suppose you have any ideas?

[Is he going to have to go on some kind of fantastic quest, like a video game?]

Being a doctor and within the Foundation, you are bound to meet someone eventually who can help. Unfortunately, directions any clearer than that come with a price.
