[It's Shiro's birthday, and normally Stein wouldn't bother with doing anything out of the ordinary, but the man's turning 40, and that's a milestone worth commemorating.

For now, it's just dinner at Shiro's favorite restaurant, but later on, who knows.]

[For now, it certainly is dinner at Shiro's favorite restaurant. But Shiro was unable to get a babysitter, so they're accompanied by two squirmy five-year-olds.

To be fair, Yukio is doing a good job of staying in his seat and eating, but Rin keeps getting bored and trying to crawl out under the table, or make some other kind of amusement.

Shiro has gotten pretty good at simultaneously stopping distractions while still carrying on whatever conversation he was having, though.]

I'm beginning to think that they might not be ready for going out in public.

[circumsutus]

Practice makes perfect. [Stein manages a completely level tone, then reaches under the table to grab Rin... again.]

At least Yukio's getting the hang of it.

[lionson]

[It is so much easier to keep track of them when there are two adults watching them.]

I think being in school has helped him, even if it's only been a month.

[He also enjoys the free time during the day, when the boys are off learning. More time for fun times work.]

How are they doing in school? [Stein's been pretty MIA recently, doing some science stuff that is highly questionable both morally and legally. Thanks Mephisto for giving him ideas.]

[lionson]

[Yeah, about that...Shiro is going to be having a talk with Mephisto, now that he's the paladin and all. He gets to have seekrit conversations about missions and all.]

Pretty much how you'd expect. Yukio is thriving, and Rin got into a fight within the first week.

[Rin flinches and looks down at his plate when Shiro says that, but Shiro reaches over and pats him on the head.]

If Yukio gets too smart, I'll have to get a tutor for him. I got confused by high-school math.

[circumsutus]

[Stein chuckles, patting Rin on the shoulder.]

So, Rin takes after you.

I'll be around to help Yukio, you know. [Optimism, maybe, or just a complete disregard for potential consequences of his actions.]

[lionson]

Hey, I wasn't that bad at school. I managed to graduate without killing anyone.

[Rin does look a little hopeful, though, when he hears that he's just like his dad. HERO WORSHIP.]

And I suppose that would be helpful. He's not quite there yet, but in another ten years he'll probably need help with calculus. Just try not to get yourself blown up before then.

You were a delinquent. [Even Stein knows "I didn't kill anyone" is a pretty low bar.]

And I'd say five years, if the Japanese education system doesn't completely squash Yukio's budding intellect.

[lionson]

[Well, look at the kind of high school life they had. Killing people was a definite possibility.]

Calculus? In five years? He's smart, but even that might be a bit much.

[circumsutus]

It's a goal to work towards. Plus, it really isn't that difficult. [Yukio will be Stein's genius child.]

[lionson]

[Just don't make him a psycho-genius, Stein.]

Well, what do you think, Yukio? Want Papa Stein to teach you math?

[Yukio, forever quiet, just nods.]

[Even if all children of the gods were supposed to be claimed by a certain age, some never really did anything with that knowledge. Sure, it was definitely safer to be at one of the camps, or at least in a group of some sort, but there were a few odd ones who managed just fine on their own.

Satoshi was one of these kids.

To be fair, it was more out of ignorance than anything else. He knew he was special, that he could do things most other people couldn't. He also knew that a strange mark had appeared over his head some time back, though he never knew the real purpose for it. It was just a thing that had happened, and Satoshi left it at that. He had no way of finding any answers, so it was best not to worry about it.

See, Satoshi lived far, far away from other people, out in the middle of a junkyard. Here he was free to build, to take things apart, and to rebuild them even better than before. Satoshi felt most at home when he was tinkering with something, and being surrounded by junk gave him lots to work with.

It also made it easier to protect himself from weird monsters. It's not easy to sneak up on someone when there's junk piled all around their house.

Satoshi probably would have continued this happy ignorance for the rest of his life, if his skills didn't end up being vitally important. The funny thing about quests from the Gods is that you can't avoid them, even if you're hermiting out in the middle of nowhere.]

[ Somehow or another, Shima Renzou became an actual motherfucker.

heyyy Shiro-chan~ someone decided to come over for some quality time ]

[Through the wonders of timefuckery, somehow Shiro is a woman and in her mid-30s. We're also going to ignore the beard in these icons, because nobody ever draws ladyShiro.

Shiro is working on something or another, because fuck yeah paperwork. And by fuck yeah I mean fuck no this is boring and she needs a distraction.]

Shima. What are you doing here?

[Shimadistraction is nice, but Shiro is still going to be frowny at first.]

[whataniceguy]

[ fuck yes timefuckery

But Shima takes that question as an invitation for him to sit on the edge of the desk and peer at the paperwork ]

I decided to drop by.

[lionson]

[We don't need no continuity or logic!]

So you were bored and decided to come bug me.

[Shiro glances up at Shima, but doesn't swat him away or anything. She really could use a distraction from all this boring work, so she'll indulge him for a bit.]

[whataniceguy]

Well, if you put it that way~

[ He's not denying it, and he's picking up a page of that paperwork to look over it a bit better

how boring on a scale of 1 to 10? ]

[lionson]

[It is a 20.

No seriously, It's some BS form about approving expense costs on a trip some exorcists took to Egypt like three months ago.

Shiro will just reach up to grab the paper back.]

Don't read it, you'll bore yourself to death.

[whataniceguy]

I just read the top of the page and felt myself drift off.

How do you manage doing this all the time?

[lionson]

Copious amounts of booze, usually. That or frequent breaks, for smoking or other things.

[whataniceguy]

Are you due for a break?

[lionson]

Well, since you're here, I think we can make it break time.

[She'll always take a break for her favorite of the massive Shima clan.]

[whataniceguy]

So, what shall we do then?

[ He says as he casually leans across the desk ]

[lionson]

[She leans forward a bit and props her chin up with a hand.]

Hmm...I'm thinking something involving you, me, and certain acts that we probably shouldn't do anywhere near this paperwork.

[If any stains get on the papers, that would be awkward.]
