Good! [Rin smiles and calls out for his familiar]

KURO! Stop chasing bugs and get over here!

[Kuro is, indeed, nearby, pouncing on fireflies. He made the mistake of trying to eat a few, and now he's got foul-tasting, glowing goop on his face. He makes a complainy meowing noise]

Uh, yeah, I know they taste bad. And I told you. But you had to find out for yourself, didn't you? [Rin how did you know that about fireflies. Better not to ask...] Anyway. Me and Suguro need a ride to the train station, you up for it?

[Kuro hops up and down, meowing excitedly. He vanishes in a poof of smoke, reappearing in his much larger form. He bounds over and crouches down so the boys can get on]

Bon still remembers his last ride on Kuro, and he's a little glad that the situation isn't so dire this time. It's no less serious, though. Races are serious business.

Bon climbs up on Kuro's back, leaving room for Rin to ride in front of him.]

How do you know what fireflies taste like, anyway?

[Yep he asked]

[Rin hops up and grabs a hold of Kuro's collar, and the cait sidhe heads toward the train station at a brisk lope. Rin laughs a little, awkwardly]

Uh... well... you know... kids put stuff in their mouths all the time! I ate a lot of bugs as a kid... Then one time, one made me really sick, so I stopped. Dad thought it was funny so he never really stopped me, except for that one time with the centipede.

You know, I can safely say that I never ate bugs as a kid.

[That was Shima's job.]

Do you just have a mouth-thing? I see you chewing on pens sometimes.

Neither did Yukio! Weird.

[a mouth thing? Rin turns and gives Bon a look]

Uh... maybe? I guess? Why are ya always watchin' me anyway? [because he had ruined a few pens that way. And at least one uniform when his fang pierced the ink stick. Either way, they were at the station, and Rin hops off]

I sit right behind you, Okumura. I have to look in that direction to see the board anyway.

But Bon is climbing down from Kuro's back now. Race time is a go.]

Alright. First one to the pond in the park wins. And no pushing anyone into the pond either, don't be a sore loser.

You can see what's in my mouth from behind me? Wow... I didn't know my head was see-through! [Rin snickers at his really awful joke. Rin stretches a little, then sends Kuro to the pond in advance to be the final authority.]

Yeah yeah, I'm not gonna push you in the pond! Because I'm going to win! On three, then...

One...

Two...

THREE!

[Rin is a demonkid of his word, and doesn't start running until he says three. But when he does, he takes off at a sprint, whipping his tail around for balance. Like some sort of stupid cheetah. ]

Like hell you'll win!

[A stupid cheetah that will soon run out of steam.

Bon starts running too, but he's not going at a full-sprint. Not yet. Even though he quickly falls behind, he will keep up a steady pace. Rin's got to tire himself out soon enough, and that's the moment Bon is waiting for.

That, or maybe Rin will get confused and circle back around to see what Bon is doing. Maybe.

Of course, Rin could also just make it to the pond with no trouble. Bon is going by his best estimates here, and he might be wrong.]

[Rin does slow, only once, to see where the hell Bon is. He expected him to be right next to him! But he's... being really slow? Well, whatever! Rin still had plenty of energy! Or so he thinks.

It's about halfway, perhaps three-quarters, to the pond when Rin really starts feeling the burn. And then? The worst happens. He suddenly stops running and starts hopping on one leg, crying out in pain and holding the other leg]

GYAAAH! SHIT! CRAMP!! OH CRAMP! FFFFFF--

[Bon hears that and he just grins. Not so much because Rin is hurting, but because Rin's yells tell him that Rin really did overestimate himself.

He's definitely not stopping, by the way. It's not his fault someone got cocky.

So guess who's just making a face as he jogs pass Rin. Take a wild guess.]

--FFFUUUCCCKKK!! YOU BASTARD! YOU JINXED ME!

[Obviously this had to be Suguro's fault. There had to be some holy text somewhere that caused cramps! DEFINITELY! Rin hisses in pain, but it seems like seeing that SMUG ASSHOLE pass him is enough to make him forget about the cramp. Or, at least, inspire him to run through it, despite a seized up leg. He takes off again, running stiff-legged for a few steps until the cramp works itself out, becoming a way more diffuse burn in his whole leg. He was going to regret the hell out of this tomorrow, and probably in just a few minutes.

But he HAD to win!

And it's very very hard to resist the urge to trip the bajesus out of Bon as he runs by. Instead, he focuses on running, breathing, and NOT succumbing to his cramp!!]

[Oh no Rin has figured out Bon's dastardly plan-

Wait no, Bon had nothing to do with Rin's cramp. That's entirely on Rin.

But seeing Rin suddenly go running past again makes Bon do a double-take. Wasn't Rin just crying in pain a moment ago?

the park is now in sight, too, and Bon doesn't want to lose. So now he'll tap in to that last reserve of energy, going from an even-paced run to a full-out sprint in an attempt to pass Rin at the last moment.]

I DIDN'T DO SHIT! IT'S YOUR OWN DUMB FAULT!

NUH...UH!!! [he's breathing really hard, so it's hard to speak. But he HAS to make sure Bon knows HE'S ON TO HIS TRICKS!] YOU... YOU'VE GOT SOME... MAGICAL BUDDHIST... DEMON CRAMPING... VERSE! [one day, Rin will realize how stupid he sounds most of the time. Today is not that day]

[IT'S NECK AND NECK... IT'S ANYONE'S GAME! Rin is running on fumes and Bon has wisely saved up his energy... But Rin also runs on the power of pure shounen dumbassery, the most potent fuel in the universe. Rin leaps! And comes to a sliding halt on his belly in the cattails.

But was it enough?!]

[See, in this unfortunate world, Rin is the shounen hero. So of course it's enough, the hero always has to win.

Bon comes skidding to a stop at the edge of the lake a couple seconds after Rin, and already he's cursing up a storm.]

Damnit! How did you manage that?! You even got a fucking cramp and you beat me?!

[Kuro, sitting on a tree branch above the pond, nods. Yep, Rin got it! But just by a hair!]

HA-HA! I DID IT! IN YOUR STUPID FACE!! [he raises his arms up, which are the only visible thing among the tall cattails. Then he makes another noise of pain and falls over again] AAuaaaaggghhhhccckkkk! It hurts, it hurts! I can't move my leeeeegggggg!

[How did he win, Suguro?

By ripping apart the muscles in his leg! Yep. It's a hot, shredded mess in there, swollen and red.

Which would be a real problem if he couldn't heal. Healing or not, he won't be walking anywhere for a little bit. Kuro hops down and transforms, grabbing Rin by his shirt collar and pulling him out of the weeds and onto the the more manicured grass. Rin's injured leg becomes sheathed in a cloak of blue flames. He's hoping to ease out some of the pain with warmth, like a compress. Despite the pain, he giggles and gloats to himself]

[he grins at Suguro and taunts him in a sing-song voice] Now you gottaaaaa brush iiiiitt! Hehehe! And I know you keep a comb with you! But you know, I'm such a good sport, I'll let you pick what we have for dinner the next few days anyway. But holy water bath is OFF the table!

[ Bon is more concerned with other things. Like how Rin's leg looks like he tore the shit out of it. So he's going from pissed to worried in about two seconds flat, as soon as Kuro drags him out of the reeds. ]

Jesus! What the hell did you do to your leg?!

I uh.... hurt it? [he blushes a little, sitting up and rubbing it with his hands and massaging the flames in. He could feel it knitting back together and it stung like hell] I guess I hurt it a little, then I kept running and it hurt it more! It'll be fine, though!

Don't say stupid shit like that!

[Even if Rin's healing it with fire, Bon is still worried. And angry too, since it seems like the pain isn't bothering Rin that much. If he can smile, then he can take a lecture.]

Don't over-extend yourself to the point that you're ripping your body apart! I don't care about bets, I'd brush your tail a thousand times if the alternative was you stupidly hurting yourself!

[ UGGGGH lectures. Rin stops smiling because he hates being lectured; honestly, he gets enough of this from Yukio. Granted, Yukio wasn't here. But still]

Tch!! I said it was fine, man. Would you lay off?

Only if you promise not to hurt yourself like that again.

[Sorry Rin, without Yukio there, Bon has to step in and be BFF/responsible adult.

[Rin huffs and lays back down. He waves a hand, somewhat dismissively]
